Do you have a lazy butt…?

Or more accurately, an underactive gluteus medius muscle?

Our glute muscles are one of the most commonly under functioning muscle groups we see in our office, why? Because of our lifestyle! Even if you train hard, if you sit down the rest of the day you are not using your glutes!

Our gluteus medius muscle is used for walking, running, standing on one leg, dynamic stability of the pelvis, bringing the leg in to midline and rotating the hip! When this muscle is not functioning properly we will often have patients complain of lower back, hip, knee or ankle pain.

There are a number of reasons why you may have an underactive glute medius; ย injury, muscle imbalance, movement distortions/compensations, postural imbalance or a structural shift causing structural compensations. A thorough examination process will help us determine why you have an underactive glute med so we can create a personalised plan on how to resolve the underlying issues.

So how can you tell if yours needs looking at?
An easy at home test you can do is to stand in front of a full length mirror on one leg with your hands on your hips and hold for 30secs, your pelvis should remain level or raise slightly. If your opposite hip drops towards the ground this indicates that your gluteus medius muscle is not working properly (aka – lazy butt)

The average person spends roughly one-third of their life asleep, yet puts almost no thought into their pillow choice, and often buys them with convenience and price in mind. Pillows play such a significant role in our daily routine, that they can determine whether we get a restful sleep, and wake up feeling refreshed and ready to go, or wake up with neck pain, shoulder pain, and feel groggy and tired.

Our pillows serve two main purposes when we use them:

1. Comfort; the more comfortable your pillow is, the better sleep you will have.
and more importantly
2. Correct sleeping posture; a good pillow will support your head and neck in the correct position, preventing you from waking up with stiff joints and tight neck muscles.

The average lifespan of a pillow is 5 years, so a great test to see if your pillow is still up to the job is too;
Fold the pillow in half, then let go of the pillow. If your pillow still has plenty of life left in it, it will spring back into shape quickly and sharply.

If not, where do you start with buying a new pillow?

There are lots of different pillows on the market, from basic feather filled pillows, through to good memory foam, multi-size pillows, which is great because we all come in different shapes and sizes.

To help you find the correct pillow firstly you need to determine whether you are a front, back or ideally a side sleeper.
Side sleepers need a larger pillow which keeps their head and neck in line with their spine. This is the ideal sleeping position as when the head/neck are aligned properly it keeps our whole spine in the proper position when we sleep allowing for easier breathing and less stress on our joints. A good indication that your pillow is too small is if you find you put your arm up under your pillow while you sleep lifting it up slightly to an adequate height.
Back sleepers require a small to medium thickness pillow, one which prevents their head from being tilted too far back while lying down but also doesn’t push it forward by being too high.
Front sleeping is not ideal as you force your neck into a sustained awkward rotational posture which can lead to muscle stiffness and discomfort.

You may even find that when you start using a pillow that is the correct height and support for you, you will naturally change to an ideal side sleeping posture.

Once sleeping position is determined, there are a whole range of different materials which pillows can be made of, and the best one for you comes down to personal preference.

It's that time again! We are excited to be starting up our Summer Bootcamps again due to high demand.

Our bootcamps are more than just running around and exercising, in our bootcamps we teach our members to move correctly. We go over how to lift weights with proper technique so that afterwards they can continue on their fitness journey knowing that they are exercising both efficiently and safely.

Our bootcamp is designed and run by a REAL military Physical Trainer Instructor (PTI) with extensive knowledge on how to cater for all levels fitness. This includes fun ways to exercise that you won't get anywhere else!

A fitness test on the first day breaks the group into three different ability groups who work with their own trainer. This means members are exercising with others of similar ability and are challenged without getting overwhelmed. This also means you get to build new friendships over the 6 weeks and have a great support crew to keep you coming and training consistently!

You WILL get fitter! You WILL get stronger! It'fs the most enjoyable way to get ready for summer! ๐Ÿ™‚
