What are secondary conditions?

What are secondary conditions?

Secondary conditions are our bodyโ€™s way of communicating with us. Our bodyโ€™s warning system gives us symptoms that are often an indicator of a more serious underlying condition.

Once a structural shift (the primary condition) occurs, it can disrupt the spinal cord and/or spinal nerves exiting the vertebral column, leading to a variety of symptoms (secondary conditions). These may include:

โ€ข Arm Pain
โ€ข Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
โ€ข Headaches
โ€ข Cervical Myelopathy
โ€ข Degenerative Disc Disease
โ€ข Degenerative Joint Disease
โ€ข Disc Herniation
โ€ข Pinched Nerve
โ€ข Dizziness/Vertigo
โ€ข Fibromyalgia
โ€ข Hip, joint, leg, lower and mid-Back Pain
โ€ข Migraines
โ€ข Muscular Pain
โ€ข Neck and shoulder pain
โ€ข Numbness/Tingling (Hands & Feet)
โ€ข Nerve Impingement Syndrome
โ€ข Sciatica
โ€ข Spinal Canal Stenosis

What is Structural Shift

What is Structural Shift

While it might be difficult to find anyone with a โ€˜text book perfectโ€™ spine, when it comes to your health, there is usually whatโ€™s called a โ€˜normal healthy rangeโ€™ to aim for. When our health strays from within these normal ranges we suffer from secondary conditions.

Structural shift occurs when your bodyโ€™s frame or skeletal structure strays from its own normal limits or when areas of your spine shift away from their normal position (alignment). This leads to a loss of normal function, compromising the nervous system through its association with the spine.

Alignment is important

When the wheels on your car are out of alignment you have issues with shuddering and uneven wear. In the same way, if the different levels of your spine move out of their normal range, you have a structural shift, which causes secondary conditions.

Our bodies use secondary conditions to warn us of potentially serious underlying problems. A structural shift away from normal in your spine is a primary condition that may be the cause of your secondary condition.

The Peak Chiropractic approach is to detect these structural shifts and develop a care plan to correct them.

Traditional Vs Structural Chiropractic

Traditional Vs Structural Chiropractic

Peak Chiropracticโ€™s focus on structural correction isย different to traditional chiropractic care.

Traditional Chiropractorsย typically aim to:

  • Increase range of motion
  • Reduce muscular spasm
  • Temporarily relieve pain

These are excellent goals and chiropractors have done well under this model of symptomatic/relief care.

ย Structural Chiropractorsย understand the goals above as secondary conditions. The way structural chiropractors like Dr Leon Crowley see it is that if youโ€™re suffering from anyย secondary conditions it makes sense that they are the result of a primary condition.

ย Your spine is your foundation

Picture your spine as you would the foundations of your house. Itโ€™s easy to understand that any shift in the foundation, regardless of severity would result in an alteration of the entire structure of your house. As a result, windows and doors wouldnโ€™t close properly and walls would crack.

One option is to make cosmetic repairs, such as greasing the windows, coveringย the cracks or putting a rug over the shifted floorboards. But, sooner or later youโ€™ll be required to deal with the primary fault of the shifted foundation, otherwise youโ€™ll faced with doingย cosmetic repairs, again and again.

If there is a structural shift in your spine, shouldnโ€™t you treat it the same way?

It is important to keep our spine moving and a great way to help with this is to stretch out daily. This is Leons favourite yoga move (mainly because its the only one he can do haha!) but it is the perfect whole spine stretch.
**If you try this and it causes you any pain please discontinue the exercise and let us know at your next visit.**

How to do it: Position yourself on the floor on hands and knees with your knees just wider than hip distance apart. Turn your toes in to touch and push your hips backwards bending your knees. Once you reach a comfortable seated position, extend your arms forward fully and allow your head to fall forward into a relaxation position. Hold this pose for 20 seconds and slowly return to starting position. Repeat three times. For modification if you have shoulder pain, place your arms on either side of your body, extending towards your feet.
